Afrički pigmejski jež je mali i njegovo drugo ime je i patuljasti jež.
Radjaju se sa malim i mekim bodljama velike do3.cm , nakon 6. nedelja te bodlje se menjaju u čvrste. Mala njuškica im je bele boje kao i prednje šape koje imaju 5. prstiju . teški su do 500. grama . imaju odlično razvijen sluh i culo mirisa .
Boja im je braon ali se mogu naci i u beloj albino boji . Hrane se insektima . žive do 9 god.
Veoma često se može naci i kao kucni ljubimac .
